          Condoms Block 2 Lanes on Highway 101

          Thousands of loose condoms spilled onto Highway 101 in Corte
Madera yesterday, stopping traffic in the fast lanes for 30 minutes
while three California Highway Patrol officers, aided by many women,
picked them up.
          "Officer Mike Turnham was the first to respond to this crisis
and upon his arrival it took him about five minutes to figure out what
to tell dispatch the problem was," said CHP officer Mark Pieschke.
          "He called for help because he said he wasn't expecting that
big of a weekend...  He just said that he needed some assistance, that
the No.  1 and No.  2 (southbound) lanes were blocked by condoms."
          The accident occurred at 3:15 p.m.  south of the Paradise exit
in Corte Madera.  Women motorists who stopped to take home some of the
Pet brand condoms in their hermetically sealed wrappers outnumbered men
five to one, Turnham said.
          "We filled up the patrol car with loose... articles," Pieschke said.
          "Evidently, there was a very large case that came off the back
of a truck.  They bounced off and exploded and...  burst open.  We
filled two garbage cans, and they are being held in our evidence
locker."
          The case held from 3,000 to 5,000 condoms packed in boxes
containing 144 each.
          If someone comes to claim them and the CHP can prove they were
responsible, the CHP will probably issue a citation for spilling a load,
Pieschke said.
