Actually it's not at all difficult.  Just follow these steps:

  1.  Place the 78 rpm record into a durable plastic bag.

  2.  Close the bag and strike vigorously with a hammer for about 2
      minutes.

  3.  Apply a rolling pin to reduce the contents of the bag to a fine
      powder.

  4.  (Very important)  Since a 78 rpm record has several times the mass of a
      CD, you need to divide the powder into several portions.

  5.  Pour one of the portions into your CD player.  It will accept it.

I suspect you must have forgotten step 4.  Always glad to be of help.
