    Of course there are those detractors who say the voracious need for
software is a hoax perpetrated by engineers.  In his outrageously perceptive
book, Augustine's Laws, Norm Augustine observes that at the current rate of
introduction of electronics into airplanes, electronics will account for the
entire weight of the plane by the year 2015.  Thereafter the avionics industry
will be faced with a dilemma: its continued profitibility will depend on some
element that weighs nothing, occupies no space, and is expensive to produce.
Fortunately, such a substance has been found.  It is called software.
